PDX to Heppner
I-84 East, State Route 74 South - 210 miles

Heading out of town early Friday afternoon and staying over in Heppner. This will
allow more time for touring and picture taking. I've never been on the stretch of road
between Heppner and Sumpter so it should be an adventure.

We visited Heppner in 2012.

Pictures of today's ride to Cecil, Oregon.

It was already raining lightly by the time we headed out. And the traffic was
pretty bad until we were well out of town. It was raining pretty good when we
got to Heppner although it cleared up an hour or so later. Pretty decent weather
(although pretty cold going over the Blue Mountains) the rest of this ride.

There's gas in Heppner (and Lexington) but it's 183 miles to the next gas in
Praire City. There is off brand fuel in Sumpter and a Pacific Pride station in
Ukiah, but if you don't have a big tank or carry extra fuel, the Blue Mountain
Scenic Byway may not be for you.

About 40 miles from Heppner and 60 miles from Sumpter is the little burb of
Ukiah, Oregon. Nice people. Pretty decent meal at the Thicket Cafe. Not much
else here in town. A Post Office and a Pacific Pride fuel station.

Forest Road 52 and 53 were in much better condition than I expected. Not much
traffic out here and pretty cold going through the passes. Some snow but the
roads were clear. You're taking a chance any time before mid-June... best to
call ahead and check road conditions before heading out.

Forest Road 73 to Granite was in "ok" shape but there were a few rough spots
along the way.

The roads were well signed from Heppner to Sumpter so no worries about getting
lost, although having a County or Forest Road map is helpful.
