We did the Southern segment of this loop tour in

We did the Northern segment of this loop tour in
2014.
Winthrop, Washington was an interesting town. And probably pretty remote and isolated
during the Winter months. It was a little too much like a yuppie tourist trap for me
but it might be a lot more pleasant if visited sometime other then over the 4th of
July weekend. I liked the late 1800's western motif which is a requirement under the
city charter.
There are actually "two" Winthrops. The first is the one you enter from the east and
is your typical small town whistle stop with fuel, grocery stores and so on. A mostly
unremarkable area. About a mile west is the small area where we stopped... right
on highway 20 so you have to go through town whether you want to or not. It might
seem less of a tourist trap if they had routed highway 20 around this street so that
people just passing through wouldn't be adding to the massive congestion here.
It was definitely worth a stop to look around but I wouldn't make a special trip
just to visit it.
I'm sure there is a lot of history here so I will probably return to explore it further...
just not over the 4th of July weekend! There were so many frigging people here that
it was difficult to get a decent shot without hordes of tourists in the frame.
