The road to the Saddle Mountain State Park was closed due to paving...
Won't re-open until June 29, 2011
And the Lower Nahelem River Road was closed due to paving...
So I guess I will be returning another day to do this hike. In the meantime...

The Sunset Highway was dedicated to the 41st Infantry Brigade, which is
Sergeant Dilligaf's old outfit.

The Steam Donkey Trail is located at a rest stop on the Sunset Highway about
ten miles East of Elsie. There is a small (half mile) very easy hike through
this historic logging area... although no artifacts remain that I could see.
If you're going to do this, also do the Dooley Spur loop... the whole thing can
be done in a 15 minute easy stroll.

They actually have a steam donkey in the museum in Stevenson, Washington
if you want to see one close up.

Not a terribly difficult hike. Close to three miles one way with 1,700 feet of
elevation. Took around four hours round trip and we dawdled most of the way. The
Saddle Mountain Natural Area State Park has a fee for camping but no fee for day use.
Nice, warm (high 70s), sunny day. Great visibility! Able to see Mount Rainier,
Mount Saint Helens, Mount Adams, Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson. And the Pacific
Ocean (for a change).

Saddle Mountain summit is the peak on the left.

Saddle Mountain summit. There's several dozen people up there, mostly bozos...
they look like ants from our vantage point a mile away. Bozos (since you asked) because
they are LOUD, talking [loudly] on cell phones and just generally being obnoxious.
And one "HEY EVERYONE! LOOK AT ME!!!" DN wannabe.... I sure hope they all make it back
to their trailers in Eugene.

Good view of the Pacific Ocean, about ten miles away.

Mount Adams (right) and Mount Saint Helens.

Mount Rainier.

Mount Hood. Mount Jefferson was too far in the distance to get a decent shot.
