GETTING THERE
Starvation Creek exit (Exit 55) off of I-84. No pass required at this time.
Hike West a short way and then turn up (left) the trail as seen in the upper left
picture. About a 1/2 mile from the trailhead, you'll come to a fork as seen in
the picture on the upper right. To do Starvation Ridge, you'd go left and up.

About a mile from the trailhead you'll come up to the last really good, exposed
viewpoint. There are three power transmission towers there. Enjoy the view...
you'll be heading into the forest and following the ridge and gaining a lot more
altitude for the next 2 1/2 miles.
We made good time today. Trailhead to the summit in 5 1/2 hours.

There's a nice view of Dog Mountain behind Julie.

About 3 miles from the summit and about 4 miles from the trailhead, you get your
first view of the Mount Defiance summit.
In about 1/2 mile you'll come to a fork that is a source of confusion to some.
Turn right and travel downhill for 1/2 mile and you'll come to Warren Lake.

After you pass Warren Lake you'll come on a scree field with some amazing views
of Mount Adams, Mount Rainier and Mount St Helens.

These pictures don't do justice to the view. Mount Rainier (ABOVE), Mount St.
Helens (BELOW). That's Wind Mountain in the foreground. Looks pretty puny from up here.

The last few hundred yards is on a service road.
Mount Defiance summit.

Mount Hood is looking pretty bare.

We tried to get up here last December but the snow across the scree field was waist
high. This is our cute little Chrismas tree..... 3.15 miles from the trailhead and
in a clearing about 1/2 mile before the Mitchell turn off.

Back at the trailhead. Mount Defiance is one of the toughest day hikes in the
Gorge. Long day.....
On a hot day you'll want to bring a LOT of water... and a couple of bottles of
ice water can be a real treat when you are parched and heading back down.
