We were out this way last year. Information on getting there can be found HERE. There are additional pictures HERE.

Another gorgeous day. Got to the Johnstone Observatory trailhead early (09:00).
There were only three other cars there and none of them turned out to be going to
Coldwater Peak. Had the trail pretty much to ourselves except that the final
couple of miles when returning were wall-to-wall tourists and dipshits.

Naturally, Julie took pictures of every colorful weed along the way...

Just past the Coldwater trail fork we ran into quite a lot of icy snow. I had an
ice axe and crampons but Julie didn't. One slip and it would be a long slide that
would introduce more risk into this hike than I was comfortable with. Since
continuing on without the proper equipment was out of the question, I decided
to have a look to see where the fork to the north went to. We got within 500'
of what I think is the backside of Coldwater Peak. Then the trail completely
disappeared. There were fairly fresh boot tracks continuing up but it would have
been an hour or more bushwhack to the top and then back down... plus these Forest
Service guys are absolutely anal about going off trail up here. We figured we'd
call it a hike and head back.

There are antennas on top of the mound to the left which I believe is Coldwater Peak.

Julie and I will be at the summit of Mount St Helens next month.

Coldwater Peak.

The Coldwater Trail fork was a nice place for lunch before heading back.

We saw quite a few eagles up here today.
