This was a tough hike.... 1,000'+ elevation gain per mile in snow... with a blazing
sun frying any exposed skin! Today was the warmest day of the year so far (high 70's)
It was nice to get away from the cold and rain for a while but.... and the Glenwood
opener is going to have to wait for at least another week I guess.
We spent all day yesterday doing snow skills exercises just above Timberline and
stayed at the Mazama Lodge Saturday night. I got pretty much no sleep so I was
feeling pretty tired and beat up before we even put on our packs this morning.
Glad I did it though. I learned a LOT and now I hopefully have the most difficult
field sessions behind me.
It was a gorgous, sunny day up on Mount Hood. We got as high as 8,888'.. about
half way to the summit. It was tough going and very tiring going up in all that snow.
Well over 1,000' of elevation gain every mile. Plus, it was H-O-T! Even with liberal
sunscreen use, everyone got pretty fried.
Got an early start Saturday and did a snow skills session just above Timberline
Lodge. Learned a lot of important techniques that will probably save my life one day.
There was a nice view of Mount Jefferson up here today.
One day maybe Julie and I will make it to the summit.
We spent a good chunk of Saturday honing our rope travel skills.
SUNDAY: That's our objective.. that little nub all by itself in the center (which
is actually quite huge when you get up there)... Illumination Rock.
That's the Palmer Snowfield up ahead, where all of those people are standing around.
It's at about 8,500' elevation.
Crater Rock is the large monolith directly behind them.
I'm planning on taking the the so-called "Old Chute" route to the summit.
This ascends upwards and left from the base of the Hogsback, on the uphill side of
crater rock.
Taking a break at the Palmer Snowfield.
This is as close to Illumination Rock as we got... maybe a few hundred feet to go.
The mountain was warming up and there were quite a few rock falls while we were here...
It was getting late, we were all tired and continuing on was deemed to be too hazardous.
Still... a good day's work.
Meet Maxine. Shes little and doesn't snore :)
