Did the Elk Kings traverse again in 2012. A very detailed TR is avaliable HERE.

Did the long version of this hike Friday with Matt S. to scope out the route
and to set up equipment for Saturday's rope and belay practice. I'm very grateful
to Matt for letting me tag along. While Saturday will be a good review session,
just before our final skills test, I learned a lot about setting up anchors and
so forth in a "real world" environment Friday.

This is a nice hike... good cardio workout, some nice views and not a lot of people.

So it turned out to be very fortuitous that Matt let me tag along yesterday. We
had a couple of team injuries early into Saturday's hike and the decision was made
to turn back after we got to the Elk summit. We spent most of the day at the
trailhead doing rope work in preparation for Tuesday's skills test.

Speaking of teamwork... I am generally not a "joiner" since I am rather fussy who
I spend my time with. Still, I have tried very hard to engage my fellow team mates
and to try to do the rah-rah team building stuff. Several of the units I was in
during my military experience were tight, cohesive groups so I do know what a strong
team feels like. Anyway.... we're all up at the summit so I drag out my camera and
ask who wants a "yearbook" picture of themselves standing beside the Elk Mountain
summit sign. Twelve people were on this particular outing. I got a few blank stares
but most of my "team mates" turned their backs on me and started fooling with their
packs or whatever. After standing there with my thumb up my nose like an asshole,
I finally realized that I was persona non grata, put my camera away and skulked
over to a corner to talk to the total strangers in another BCEP team that was also
at the summit. None of this reflects negatively on the BCEP program, of course...
and I wish everyone in the group all the best moving forward, but I don't know
that there are many students in BCEP Team 3 that I'd want to go into combat with :(

Matt signing us in on the Elk Summit Mazama Guestbbok.

A pretty socked in Kings Mountain Summit. Didn't get any other good pictures due
to the low clouds/fog/rain/snowfall....
