GETTING THERE: Here's how to get to
Husum, Washington.
The trailhead is off of Indian Creek Road
Just before the first fork in the road and at the top of the rise, you'll see a
grassy turn out on the left. There's always been a car or two parked there any
time I've been there. The trail is directly across from the turn out. Hike in
about 1/4 mile and you'll see the beginning of the Weldon trail to your right.
The Weldon Wagon Trail was a wagon route built in 1911 that linked the Sanborn Rd
to the town of Husum, and was used to transport apples from the orchards. It has been
abandoned since 1923, when the apple boom slowed a bit, and there were better ways to
get apples to town than hauling them on this rugged, narrow road.
This is a fairly easy 5 mile in and out hike for anyone who is in reasonable
shape. The trail is pretty easy to follow except for the last 1/2 mile or so if there
is snow on the ground. Even still, with all of the private property barbed wire fences
in the area, it would be difficult to get hoplessly lost up here. Most of this hike
is out in the open and very exposed which surprised me. This trail ends (or begins)
at East Sanborn Road in Sanborn, Washington, which is pretty much in the middle of nowhere.
You pretty quickly come out to a clearing and it's exposed views of white oak
trees for the next couple of miles. You won't get into the forest again until you
are about 1/2 mile from the Sanborn Road trailhead.
Ran into this interesting out building.. and a mostly caved in outhouse.
Possibly a storage/tool shed for supporting the apple orchard operations?
This was a shorter hike than we anticipated. It was 2 1/2 miles to the Sanborn
Road trailhead which took about an hour to get to.
There's a lot of old, abandoned farming, logging and various other equipment strewn
around at this end of the trail. I'm guessing this trailhead is a lot less popular
and a lot less visited than the Husum end.
At the top of the hill, about 1/2 mile from the Sanborn Road trailhead, the trail
navigation got a little dicey with the blow downs and 6" of snow obliterating the trail.
Probably fine in the Summer although I was glad I had my GPS with me.
When we got back to the trailhead, Julie was pleased that our vehicle was in
the same pristine condition we left it in.
Topped off the day by paying our respects to the Native Americans down in the
Husum
cemetery and then over to the Hood River China Gorge restaurant for kung pao.
It was a pretty crappy weather day but we made the most of it and had a pretty nice Sunday.
